Back to school this year is looking completely different for many students. Instead of looking for the typical back to school items, my husband and I realized we were going to have to be better prepared for the virtual learning aspect of going back to school this month.
In July, our school district gave us some information regarding the students returning to classroom instruction. Initially, per our district’s instructions, our boys would alternate in class and virtual learning at home. They would only attend half days (Monday thru Thursday) and Fridays would be virtual. However, that recently changed and both boys will be home doing virtual learning until November 3. With the amount of home schooling and virtual learning going on, we knew we had to figure out how to make this more doable for all of us.
As I mentioned in the past few months, my home office is my kitchen table. My husband’s office is our bedroom. I usually had both boys sitting at the table with me, but it can get quite cluttered between books, my computer, Chromebook and all the other things that come along with virtual learning. We decided to set up a writing table in Alex’s room to give him the space and peace he needs to successfully manage his virtual lessons.
For my son, Michael, I need to be able to sit and work with him, so learning at the kitchen table is what works best for us.
Today, I thought I would share what we purchased for the boys’ back to school virtual learning.

Sauder Brookland Writing Desk, Select Cherry Finish – We chose this desk because it was just the right size for Alex. It has two drawers for storing pencils and supplies. The workspace is large enough for him to have his Chromebook, textbooks and be able to write as well. More importantly, he loves it. When I went to add the link for this desk, it was not available, but the Home Office Desk, Modern Industrial Simple Style Computer Desk, Workstation, Sturdy Writing Desk, Flrrten is very similar.

Office Chair Ergonomic Desk Task Chair – – We chose this chair because it had multi-functions, everything from the seat height being adjustable, tilt and rock function, along with lumbar support. It also came with wheels making it easier for Alex to push in and out.

Since we purchased this before school started, Alex has been test-driving his new workspace out and it’s official; he loves it! To me, that’s half the battle. He is happy with his new desk and chair and he is eager to start his first day of 3rd grade!
Before our school district changed directions and decided to go all-virtual, I was struggling with making the decision to send the boys back into the classroom. I know many parents out there felt the same. Whether your children are learning back in the classroom or at home virtually, I hope we all continue to navigate our lives until this period of uncertainty is over.
I’d love to hear if your children are back in the classrooms or learning virtually in the comments below.
