Day 11 – The perfect Christmas gift: Time together
In 2016, I was trying to come up with an original Christmas gift for my husband. I wanted it to be different than any of the gifts I have given him before, so I started searching on Pinterest (Of course!). I found a variety of DIY monthly pre-planned dates and I knew that was what I wanted to do. Since having our boys, finding time to go on a date was far and few. It’s hard enough to get a babysitter but when you have a special needs child, the chances are even less. We only have a handful of family members we can count on, so I had to make sure all preplanned monthly dates were covered.
I was truly excited about this, first, I was going to get to spend a few hours with my husband and I would also get to “leave” my home as well. For me this would be like mini vacations. The first thing I wanted to plan was two overnights during the year. So, I went ahead and made all the necessary arrangements. I also made sure there were a few nights of doing nothing but relaxing at home. After planning all the dates, I bought little cards and wrote each planned date on the card and placed it in an envelope with a bow on it. All the cards were placed in a decorative box.
Unfortunately, life happens, and we were only able to do a few dates. In February after my scheduled catscan, I was told I needed to visit with a thoracic surgeon in order to determine the next steps because the lung nodules had increased in size. Long story short, I had to have two surgeries to remove the nodules from both lungs. All the dates I had preplanned were on hold. It was a difficult year for us but I’m more grateful that my cancer was found early, and we were able to put it all behind us.
In 2017, I thought I would try again, but I took a different approach. I went back to typical wrapped gifts but also added hand written letters for my husband to read on different occasions. Once again, finding this idea on Pinterest, I loved the originality of the idea and that I was able to do what I love, write letters. Each letter had a specific theme. There were letters to read when he felt down or had a bad day. A letter to read when I was in a bad mood or did something to annoy him. There were of course love letters, appreciation, and remember when. Thankfully, this idea was a success.
So, what are my plans for this year? This year, we are keeping it simple. We are planning an overnight trip in January. We decided to plan together and to take the stress out of shopping for gifts for each other this year. I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully, this year nothing stands in our way.
Do you have anything special planned with your significant other this year? I’d love to hear about it.
